About Our Projects

Since the begining of the East Brighton New Deal for Communities (ebndc) programme back in 2000, we have funded over 300 projects. Each project has been designed through a rigorous process called Project Cycle Management (PCM) - for more information click here. Steering groups, approval boards and the Programme Board - all with resident majorities have been responsible for all approvals.

Steering Groups

Three groups were set up from the start of the process and took responsibility for different themes of the NDC (for more about themes click here): Health; Education and Employment; and Environment (which also covered Community Safety). A fourth group was added - Taking Control - which covered the projects that were developed under this theme. Click here for more information in the Archive section about our Steering Groups.

Starting a project

Projects started in two main ways: sometimes steering groups came up with ideas for projects which were then developed by local organisations. Or an organisation approached the NDC with an idea for a project that had worked elsewhere, or which was a new approach to an old problem. If the steering groups agreed with the ideas they were then developed, with the support of the Programme Team.

Appraisal

Once a project was developed and had met all the basic requirements (local people had been consulted about how it would best meet the needs of the local area, it had a clear budget, contingency plans, etc) it was submitted to an approval panel. All panels had resident majorities. These panels agreed funding up to £100,000. If the funding requested was more than this, the application was also considered by the NDC Sub Board and if over £250,000 projects were submitted to Government Office of the South East (GOSE) for approval.

Monitoring and evaluation

Steering groups receive regular updates on the progress of projects: about whether they are achieving what they set out to do, whether their monitoring is suitable and what plans they have in place for the end of their funding period.
