Equalities Group

The Equalities Group was formed at the start of the New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme and was primarily a resident group. It was based on the recognition that there is great diversity among the people living and working in East Brighton, and the knowledge that sometimes projects, activities and information need to be offered in different ways to enable everyone to be able to get involved.

The Equalities Group's main role was to make sure that the NDC programme was as open as possible to as wide a range of the community as possible. It looked at access to events, decisions, places, information and services. The Group met regularly until March 2007 to support and oversee equalities in the work of all involved residents, staff and funded projects.

One of the major achievements of the Group was to build inclusive and accessible approaches and activities into the projects that we funded and the processes that we run. This means that equalities work is part of the way we do things and becomes a natural part of everyone's roles. The Group decided that, in the smaller changed programme from 2007, equalities work would be overseen by the Equalities Manager and continued throughout the systems and monitoring that they had helped set up.
